Dear All
The Maritime Union of India (MUI) is proud to announce that a Judgement is passed by the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court in appeal matter of Smt. Sumana Bandyopadhyay & Anr. Ver. The Dy. Director of Income Tax (International Taxation)-ITAT 374 OF 2016 dt. 13th July 2017.
This means that henceforth, no seafarer will be sent a notice by income tax authorities anywhere in India to demand income tax, as long as the seafarer fulfills the criteria of achieving NRI status.
The above achievement was possible due the efforts of The Maritime Union of India (MUI) and The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI). Mr. Amar Singh Thakur – General Secretary – MUI, Mr. Abdulgani Serang – General Secretary cum Treasurer – NUSI, alongwith Advocate Mr. R.S. Padvekar – Advocate – High Court visited Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), New Delhi, through guidance and assistance of Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat – Member of Parliament – Lok Sabha a number of times.
Based on the last hearing held in Kolkata on 11 July, 2017, which was attended by Mr. Thakur a judgement was passed to declare full and final relief to the Late Officers wife and consequently, for all Indian Seafarers. A copy of the judgement is attached for your reference.
MUI has carried out its duty keeping in mind that an atmosphere of insecurity, suspense and loss of morale had begun to spread within the ranks of all seafarers as their source of income was targeted after working so hard on board.
MUI is certain that this judgement will do down in history as a landmark effort and will offer security for todays seafarers in the coming days.
Best Regards
Amar Singh Thakur
General Secretary
